If you love classic RPGs as well as more modern RPGs and you also love free games, you’re in luck. GOG is currently giving away the Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut for free, which includes Wasteland 2 as well as the original game, Wasteland 1. All you have to do is go to GOG and claim it in the next 24 hours (the giveaway ends at 9 or 10 AM EST on December 13th… it’s unclear because GOG lists different times in different places). Even though you have nothing to lose by claiming this, let’s walk through why you really should, and what you’ll get.
Wasteland 1
Wasteland 1 was a post-apocalyptic RPG released by inXile in 1988. Nine years later, Interplay made a game heavily based on Wasteland called Fallout. You might have heard of it. Wasteland laid the foundation for countless CRPGs to come, and the first one in particular feels like a graphical Dungeons and Dragons adventure. The fact that a GOG code for Wasteland 1 is included in this giveaway for the Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut is an awesome bonus.
Wasteland 2
A whopping 26 years after Wasteland 1 came out, inXile released Wasteland 2, which was partially crowdfunded through Kickstarter. Wasteland 2 is a true sequel to Wasteland 1, but it looks about 26 years nicer. Wasteland 2 is one of the better modern tactical RPGs out there, so don’t miss your opportunity to grab it for free.
Prepare For Wasteland 3!
I suspect that this giveaway was set up as a way to get people into the Wasteland series ahead of the release of Wasteland 3 for Windows, Linux, OSX, Xbox One, and PS4, which is set to be May 19th, 2020. Since Xbox Game Studios has recently bought inXile, Wasteland 3 is going to be a sequel to Wasteland 2 with a substantially bigger budget, which is very exciting. On top of that, you’ll be able to play it on day 1 without spending any extra money if you’re a Game Pass subscriber.
Anyways, if you’re at all a fan of CRPGs or tactical RPGs, or if you’re a Fallout fan that wants to see one of the main inspirations for the original game/setting, claim the Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut for free from GOG before 9 AM EST on December 13th. In one place, GOG says the giveaway will end at 9 AM EST, but it says 10 AM EST in another place. To be sure, let’s just assume it will be 9 AM EST. Regardless, the clock is ticking!
