The Next Assassin’s Creed Should Be In Mesoamerica

Like a large percentage of gamers, I’ve enjoyed my share of Assassin’s Creed games. I know a lot of people didn’t like the shift to more generic open world gameplay, but I thought that the worldbuilding in Assassin’s Creed Origins was absolutely fantastic. It’s nothing new to the series, either, as Assassin’s Creed Unity featured such an accurate recreation of Notre Dame cathedral that some suggested it could aid rebuilding efforts after this year’s fire. It’s commonly thought that the next Assassin’s Creed game will deal with Vikings, so let’s assume the setting has already been decided upon for the next game. After that, I think it’s time we get an Assassin’s Creed game set in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

Assassin’s Creed Settings

Ubisoft has set mainline Assassin’s Creed games in the following settings:

  • Assassin’s Creed: The time of the Third Crusade (1191) in the region of Israel/Palestine/Syria.
  • Assassin’s Creed II: The Renaissance (the 15th and early 16th centuries) in Italy.
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood: The Renaissance (the 15th and early 16th centuries) in Italy.
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations: The time of the Third Crusade (1191) in the region of Israel/Palestine/Syria and the 16th century in Constantinople.
  • Assassin’s Creed III: The time of the American Revolution (1754 to 1783 specifically) in the United States.
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag: The golden age of piracy (the 18th century) in the Caribbean.
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue: The Seven Years’ War (1756 to 1763) in many locations, including Lisbon, New York City, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia.
  • Assassin’s Creed Unity: The time of the French Revolution (1789 to 1794 specifically) in Paris.
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate: The Victorian Era (1868 specifically) in London.
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins: The time of the Ptolemaic Kingdom (49 to 47 BCE specifically) in Egypt.
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: The time of the Peloponnesian War (431 BCE specifically) in Greece
  • Unreleased Assassin’s Creed Game: Assumed to be the Viking age.

The Next Assassin’s Creed Game Should Be Set In Mesoamerica

A lot of people want an Assassin’s Creed set in feudal Japan, but Ubisoft has already said that they’d rather focus on settings that haven’t been covered so much in previous video games. Therefore, I think that the obvious candidate setting for the next Assassin’s Creed game should be somewhere in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. This could involve the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec civilizations, to name a few, so there’s a lot of room to explore.

Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica has been underrepresented in the vast majority of media and pop culture. Making an Assassin’s Creed game set in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica would be a great way to help people learn about this important time and place in history. It would also probably gain a lot of Latinx favor for Ubisoft, which I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.
