Have you ever played a choose-your-own-adventure book, or do the words “choose-your-own-adventure book” sound like something you’d be interested in? If not, the Sorcery! games aren’t for you. Otherwise, keep reading.
Sorcery! is a series of choose-your-own-adventure mobile games based on gamebooks by Steve Jackson, tabletop game kingpin and Munchkin creator. There are four games so far, and each one is worth its weight in gold. The Sorcery! games are some of the best mobile games around, and possibly the best story-driven series available for your Android or iOS smartphone.
Sorcery! Gameplay
At their core, Sorcery! games are digital choose-your-own adventure books. They take advantage of the digital format, though, by moving beyond choose-your-own adventure books with interactive maps, battles, and even games. For example, if you feel like it, you can spend an hour taking a break from your adventure and just gamble. In other words, despite being gamebooks, the Sorcery! games have more gameplay and gameplay variety than the vast majority of mobile games.
If you want to just blow through the story and only fight the people you have to fight, you can do that. If you want to treat it like Skyrim and wander around exploring to your heart’s content, you can do that. In other words, the Sorcery! games strike an excellent balance between the freedom of choose-your-own-adventure books and the mechanics of a well-programmed video game. I can’t even begin to get into everything you can do in the Sorcery! series here, so just trust me when I say you have to try them for yourself.
Definitely Worth The Money
The only downside to the Sorcery! games is that they’re not free, and you have to pay $5.99 for the pleasure of each. As far as premium mobile games go, though, you can’t get much more bang for your buck than the Sorcery! games. On top of having unique, immersive gameplay, they’re extremely replayable.
In other words, even though you have to pay nearly $25 for all four games, you’re getting more than enough content to make it worth your while. Give the first one a shot to see whether or not you like it, but keep in mind that it’s much shorter than the ones that follow. Still, if you like choose-your-own-adventure books, you’ll be hooked right away.
Especially with Google Play Pass!
Great news everyone: the newly announced Google Play Pass includes all four Sorcery! games. In other words, instead of having to pay $24 for all four games, you can play them free for a month and then for just $1.99/month (or $4.99/month after the introductory year)! In other words, you have no excuse not to have the best gamebooks around on your phone.
