When Stranger Things was first released by Netflix, it seemed like a vaguely creepy ’80s throwback about some kids. No one had any idea how much it would blow up, and now season 2 of Stranger Things is one of the more anticipated TV premieres this year. If you can’t wait till the season 2 release date of October 27th, you’re in luck. Netflix has released a Stranger Things mobile game, and not only is it free, but it is excellent.
A Retro RPG
Stranger Things: The Game is in the style of Retro City Rampage and Hotline Miami, which are of course themselves in the style of late ’80s to early ’90s RPGs. The game starts by putting you in the role of Chief Hopper, who has just been informed that the four boys are missing. His first quest is to go to the Hawkins laboratory and see if he can find any clues, which he does. The Hawkins laboratory serves as the first dungeon in the game, and these dungeons make up the majority of the gameplay.
Excellent Gameplay
The game itself is pretty standard top-down RPG stuff, with keycards needed before you can enter certain doors and enemies you have to deal with before you can move on from room-to-room. Before long, Chief Hopper finds one of the boys, and you can immediately switch to him and start playing with him if you want. Where Hopper can only punch, the boy he finds can use ranged attacks, which are necessary to complete the dungeon. The fact that the gameplay is fairly unoriginal is why it’s so great, though. It’s not an endless runner, it’s not a Clash of Clans ripoff, it’s just a good old-fashioned retro RPG.

It’s not just fun and games, though. Each dungeon has a VHS tape that completionists can find after they defeat the boss. If you collect all eight VHS tapes, you can watch an exclusive season 2 trailer. Singing for your supper has never been so fun.
