SEGA Forever Expands Its Collection With Golden Axe

If you’re a loyal My Dpad reader, you know that we’ve been excited about SEGA Forever since it was first announced, since the Sega Genesis is one of our favorite consoles to emulate. With SEGA Forever, people who don’t know how to emulate (or don’t want to wade into the murky legal waters of emulation) can now take their favorite retro games on the go with them if they have a mobile device. There were a few notable omissions from the original crop of SEGA Forever games, and we mentioned three of these in the first article we wrote about SEGA Forever.

Well, SEGA has just added the first of those three games to their mobile collection: Golden Axe. That’s right, you can now play the original Golden Axe right on your smartphone without having to download an emulator or look for any roms. This should be especially exciting for Golden Axe fans with iPhones, since it’s harder for them to emulate games in general.

Anyways, Golden Axe is one of the best side-scrolling hack-and-slash arcade games of all time, and if you’re like me you’ve emulated it on plenty of consoles (as well as played plenty of the classic version on Sega Genesis), including touchscreens. If you have played Golden Axe on a touchscreen, you know that the controls can be less-than-ideal, particularly the movement controls. If anything, though, this just adds another level of challenge to the game, since you have to play a lot faster to avoid constantly getting hit.

Anyways, Golden Axe is free with ads, but you can pay 99 cents to buy the premium version which does not include ads. This is the general model for SEGA Forever games, with varying costs of going premium. If you loved Golden Axe growing up or have only heard about it and want to finally give it a try, go ahead and get that free download.

SEGA Forever Still Needs The Lion King And Road Rash II

SEGA Forever still owes us two more games before I’ll have most of my old favorite Genesis classics on my phone: The Lion King and Road Rash II. Once they’ve added those two, I may never have to download another Sega Genesis emulator on my phone, and that’s usually the first download I grab when I set up a new phone. Anyways, keep checking back at My Dpad and we’ll let you know when that day finally comes.
