If you, like me, have spent years looking for a great free MMORPG for your smartphone, you’ve found mixed success. Sure, there’s the heavy hitters like Order & Chaos Online, but after a while they suffer the same problems their console/PC counterparts do: they’re just theme parks. On the other hand, you can try some of the popular indie offerings like Mirage Realms and Rucoy Online, but they feel unpolished and confusing when you first start your adventure (full disclosure: maybe I’m just dumb. Don’t get mad at me, Mirage Reals or Rucoy Online devs). I just recently found a new free mobile MMO, though, and I think this might just be the one. I’m talking about Mystera Legacy.
Mystera Legacy: Free Mobile/Browser Sandbox MMORPG
Mystera Legacy is a free sandbox MMO you can either play on your smartphone or on your browser.
It’s a bit like Terraria/Junk Jack mixed with a 2D MMORPG. In other words, it’s incredible. I haven’t been playing very long, but I couldn’t put it down for a few hours the first time I picked it up, and that’s one way to gauge how good an MMO is.
Newbie Village
One of the main reasons I like Mystera Legacy so much already is because of how they handled Newbie Village, AKA the tutorial. Like most mobile MMOs, Mystera Legacy starts with a tutorial explaining the game, but unlike most mobile MMOs, the tutorial is actually well-done. This is because Newbie Village is a safe space to explore the game while making progress at your own pace. For example, you can either rush through, learning as you go without stopping to put any of these lessons into practice, or you can spend a good amount of time hunting, fishing, cooking, mining, foraging, and chopping down trees.
The best part, though, is that the tutorial is actually directed. Most of the other sandbox MMOs I’ve played on my smartphone have started with a tiny tutorial where they explain the combat and then basically just leave you to figure out the game. That just ends up being boring, cause I have no idea what that game’s depth is. Mystera Legacy guides you just enough at the beginning to keep you interested, though, without making you feel like you’re looking at a completely blank canvas.
See If You Like It
Of course, at the end of the day, things like this come down to personal preference. I’m just letting you know that Mystera Legacy now has an Android app that you can play it on, and even though it’s technically Unreleased according to Google Play, the stability issues aren’t too big of a problem. As you can see from the pictures, it’s basically a Runescape style MMORPG where you can either spend your days hunting, fishing, farming, or a number of other things. You can also build a house and quietly live out your days in peace. Even if you just want to take out your phone to kill a few monsters every now and then, give Mystera Legacy a chance.
