Who likes free games? If you don’t, maybe this isn’t exactly the site for you. If you love completely free games like I do, though, let me tell you about the deal that Origin is currently running on SteamWorld Dig.
Free Games On Origin, No Strings Attached
Every so often, Origin will offer one of their games for free in exchange for you using Origin (whether or not you’re currently using it). This is in an attempt to wrestle some PC gaming market share from the juggernaut that is Steam. The fact that they keep running these deals means that the move probably isn’t totally working, but at the end of the day, it’s a great game being offered completely for free.
Is SteamWorld Dig Any Good?
Anyways, this wouldn’t be a good deal unless the game being offered was actually good. SteamWorld dig is kind of a cross between a Metroidvania and a Terraria-type game, as it’s not just a platformer but you can also dig and explore yourself. In fact, if you like playing games like Terraria or Junk Jack but wish there was more of a guided story, SteamWorld Dig might be just the thing for you.
Full disclosure: I haven’t played the game myself yet. Since it’s being offered for free, you really don’t have much to lose (unless you’re just completely against signing up for Origin for some reason). Still, in case you don’t want to waste your time on a bad game, know that IGN gave SteamWorld Dig a 9.5 and GameSpot gave it a 7, so it seems like it’s definitely worth a shot.
SteamWorld Dig Platforms
SteamWorld Dig is also one of those games that seems to be on every gaming console possible, from PC, Mac, and Linux, to PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One, and to the 3DS and PS Vita. In other words, if you like it, you can take the fun onto pretty much any other console you have. It’s just a shame that it’s not available for iPhone or Android yet, as it seems like it would be a great mobile game too.
Anyways, this free deal is only available for a “limited time”, but according to SharewareOnSale’s site they seem to think it’ll last about 19 more days (so basically, until the end of September). If you want to save $10 on a great game that should satisfy fans of platformers just as much as it will satisfy fans of Minecraft, go ahead and give SteamWorld Dig (and Origin) a try. Who knows, maybe you won’t just like the game itself, but you might even gain an appreciation for Origin. If you don’t, you didn’t lose anything but a little bit of time.
