Here at My Dpad, we’re big fans of Kairosoft games. In fact, if you check out our mobile game recommendations, you’ll see that Dungeon Village was the very first mobile game we wrote about. Kairosoft has been making great mobile games for a long time, and part of that success is understanding what makes a good mobile game different from a watered-down console game. Among all this success, though, Beastie Bay might just be the cream of the crop (and it’s free!)
Update: We recently (October 2019) went ahead and just listed the five best Kairosoft games, check out our list here
Beastie Bay: Monster RPG In Your Pocket
A lot of Kairosoft games have similar simulation aspects, such as building a town (or school, or mall, or game dev studio, or…), and Beastie Bay will be very familiar to Kairosoft fans in that regard. However, Beastie Bay layers a monster-collecting RPG (think Digimon/Pokémon lite) on top of that, which is where the magic comes in. Of course, this isn’t the deepest turn-based monster RPG out there, but it will more than scratch that Generation 1 Pokémon or Dragon Quest V itch.
Basically, you start on a small island that has a bit of a monster problem. You fight these monsters with your own monsters, but each monster you catch needs you to build a house for it. You might also save some people, but they also need you to build a house for them. Of course, to build a house, you’ll need wood, which you can either get by questing or by building a lumber mill. Also… you get where this is going.
Great Town Simulation
That’s right, Beastie Bay has some pretty beefy town simulation to it. Aside from having to provide houses for your allies (and more useful characters like the shopkeeper), you also have to try to drum up tourism. In other words, rather than dungeon crawling for the sake of dungeon crawling, you’re doing it to turn your island into a nice tourist destination.
Eventually, you’ll have a nice pristine island, with only one (replayable) dungeon left to access. That’s when the fun really starts, though, because that’s when other islands with their own monster problems start reaching out for help. This means new monsters to fight, which also means new monsters to catch. On top of building out your town and helping other islands clear out monsters, you’ll also be researching new technologies with your good friend Dr. Chimpman.
Download Beastie Bay Free
Anyways, if Beastie Bay is up your alley, you probably know by this point. So go download it for free for your Android or iPhone! That’s right, it’s completely free. Also, if you end up enjoying it as much as I did, consider paying $3.99 to get rid of ads and support Kairosoft in making great mobile simulation games!
