If you’re an avid mobile gamer, you’ve probably heard of desert golfing, the zen-like endless golfing simulator. It’s one of the indie darlings of smartphone gaming, but it’s not free, meaning you can’t easily see for yourself whether or not all the love for the game is just hype. Well, after thinking about it for years, I finally sprung for the small entry fee and began my desert golfing career, and I can say it lives up to all its great reviews.
Desert Golfing Is Very Simple
Desert Golfing, like all great mobile games, is almost mind-bogglingly simple. As the name suggests, Desert Golfing has you golf in the desert. That’s it.
Desert Golfing Gameplay And Controls)
Each hole tees off where the last one ended, and you simply stroke the ball by pulling back, aiming, and configuring your power (which is based on how far you pull back). By the way, a quick tip: you don’t need to pull back on the ball itself, as you can start your stroke from anywhere on the screen. If you get it in the hole you go on to the next hole, and if you hit the ball out of bounds (that is, out of view), you start from the beginning. That is the full extent of the gameplay in Desert Golfing, and it is executed to perfection.
Desert Golfing User Interface
Each hole’s flag shows the hole number you are on, and in the middle of the top of the screen (though not picture here), you can see two numbers. The first number is the total amount of strokes you have hit, starting with the very first hole. The second number is how many strokes you have on the current hole (so, +3 means you’re on your third stroke of the hole, and the plus sign is because it will be added to your total).
This makes up the entirety of the user interface. Seriously. In fact, you don’t even have a visible character like the image at the top of this page implies. In other words, Desert Golfing is truly a minimalist game at its heart. So why is it worth its price (a very reasonable $1.49)? Because this is an endless golfing simulator with no frills. Waiting for the bus? Pull out your phone and play a hole or two. Trying to kill an hour? Pull out your phone and play a few dozen holes.
The Best Relaxing Mobile Golfing Simulator
The first time I started playing this game, I didn’t even exit the app or put my phone down until I was at the 100th hole. That alone bought me back my $1.49, so everything else is just gravy. If you’re the type that wants an incredibly simple mobile game with literally endless replayability (or rather playability, since you can’t replay holes), Desert Golfing is the game for you. It’s basically the perfect mobile game, and the best way to relax with your smartphone.
