Here at My Dpad, we’ve been singing the praises of West of Loathing (also here), but only because it’s just that good. Well, I’ve just about beaten the game, so now I feel even more comfortable recommending it to the good readers here at My Dpad. This will be the final update from us about the game, and then you don’t have to hear about it anymore.
As you can see above, I’ve finished the main story of West of Loathing, and am just putting off watching the main cutscene since I don’t want to say goodbye just yet. According to Steam, it took me 14 hours to reach this point, making the game well worth it’s $11 price tag (any time you can get more than an hour of entertainment per dollar you’ve spent, I say that’s a good deal). It should be noted that I have been playing through as a completionist, though I haven’t unlocked every single thing in the game yet. That means it’s possible someone could beat the game in less time if they rush through it, and it also means that it takes more than 14 hours to 100% the entire game.
In other words, if you’ve been on the fence when it comes to West of Loathing, I can say with full certainty that it is worth the price of admission. The entire world of West of Loathing is completely fleshed out, with no parts of the story rushed or half-baked. The writing throughout is at once witty, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and gut-busting. You might meet a character who you can’t help until much later on in the game, but once you get to the point where you can actually help solve their problem you well up with pride and realize how invested you are in the wild west world of West of Loathing.
While I wouldn’t say it’s the most replayable game out there (many RPGs aren’t), there certainly is the potential for replayability. I myself will probably sit on it for a few months before coming back and playing it as a completely different character with completely different goals (and completely different health standards). Even if there was no replay potential, though, I would still 100% recommend West of Loathing to any Kingdom of Loathing fan, any RPG fan, and really anyone who wants to play through an excellently-written story on their computer (no matter how low-spec it is).
