Puzzle Fighter

Puzzle Fighter: The Perfect Retro Mobile Arcade Game

Attention fans of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo: boy, have I got the game for you.

If you haven’t heard, Capcom has released an official Puzzle Fighter game for mobile. It’s basically the Puzzle Fighter action you know and love shrunk down to your smartphone screen. The only change is a good one: the game is centered around PvP.

In case you don’t know what Puzzle Fighter is all about, it’s basically Street Fighter with Tetris mechanics (not to be confused with the ever-popular mobile genre of console games with match-3 mechanics). If you’ve played Puzzle Pirates, it’s basically the Swordfighting minigame. If you haven’t played Puzzle Pirates or Tetris, and you’ve overcome all that to still be reading this somehow, trust me, it’s a fun mechanic.

Puzzle Fighter Real Time Battles

Gacha, unfortunately

Let me rip this bandage off quickly: the character system is centered around Gacha mechanics. I know, it’s a bummer, but you can get past it. That’s because while having better characters does increase your chances of winning, at the end of the day it all comes down to what your puzzling skill is.

Live PVP

In fact, since the PVP is actual PVP (that is, you’re playing a character actually being controlled by another person, not just bot based on a real person’s character profile, like many mobile games handle PVP), it really does all come down to puzzling skill. This is because you can overwhelm someone’s financial investment in the game with your puzzling prowess, which means it’s definitively not pay-to-win. Paying money will increase your chances, but they won’t put a bad puzzler on the leaderboard.

This is what makes Puzzle Fighter so special. Rather than having to deal with that fake, watered-down PVP described above in which every game starts to feel the same, Puzzle Fighter feels like a truly competitive puzzler/fighting game. It’s like playing Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo in your living room with your best friends, but if your best friends were some of the best Puzzle Fighters from all around the world, ranked according to skill.

The Best Part? Puzzle Fighter Is Not Pay To Win

As I mentioned above, the best part of Puzzle Fighter is that it’s not pay-to-win. In other words, nothing’s stopping you from Puzzle Fighter glory except your own puzzling skill. Now go out there and kick some familiar, Street Fighter character ass!
